<div style="display:none">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>A few days ago I was taking part in a family party and met a
few men who had been entitled as PhD from a university of
science and technology in varied fields,
such as electrical power, optoelectronics, auto control,
information technology and so on.
In our talk I mentioned Bertrand Russell,
I took it for granted that they should have known him.
However, I was amazed that they had never heard of such
a name, even though, the greatest thinker has been honored as
“ sage of 20th century”
and his works had been one of Albert Einstein’s favorites.
Many complain can also be heard among us that learning
liberal arts is a waste of time. Students say they
would rather save the time for studying science subjects
because only being equipped with more technological skills
can they find a promising job and earn high salary.
So why bother to learn those “useless” subjects!
Nowadays the purpose of education seems to have been
reduced to training specialists rather than a whole human.
Graduates are judged by their specialties in personnel market;
and a university is assessed by its scientific research
level and the efficiency resulting from the application of technology.
Vast majority of leaders at various level of government
are from science background. Our society has been getting
more and more practical and even utilitarian.
But I believe this tendency of our educational system can
only lead to dangerous dead end because on the one hand,
liberal arts can enrich our imagination and thinking,
expanding our experience and stimulate our creativity;
on the other, it can illuminate our wisdom to distinguish
the good from the evil, the true from the false, and the
beautiful from the ugly.
Just for the sake of expediency and profit, especially in
the era of technology, our education
may only mass-produce high IQ technicians but low EQ idiots.
My dear professors and fellow students, with such an education,
can we expect a bright future?
